Siemens launches Digital Mining Incubator at Wits’ Tshimologong Precinct

Siemens will collaborate with the Wits’ Tshimologong Digital Innovation Precinct, to create the Digital Mining Incubator (DMI) which will be focused on developing mining engineering competence for students.

The programme is aimed at upskilling young individuals who have an interest in the mining sector, as well as disadvantaged individuals interested in actively participating in the future of mining.

“Our partnership with Wits and Tshimologong is about advancing the digital opportunities that mining offers our youth, failing to position the mining sector in South Africa within discussion about the fourth industrial revolution means remaining stagnant on the path towards industrialisation,” said Siemens CEO for Southern and Eastern Africa, Sabine Dall’Omo, to Engineering News.

The mentors from Wits, Tshimologong and Siemens will aim to help enable learners with the tools and skills to effectively provide a platform for developing innovative solutions in mining industry in South Africa including health and safety.

“Having Siemens open a digital incubator dedicated to promoting innovation in mining is a very significant landmark in bringing the benefits of the 21st century digitalisation to one of the most critical sectors in the South Africa economy,” noted Director of Wits University’s Joburg Centre for Software Engineering (JCSE), and founder of the Tshimologong Precinct, Professor Barry Dwolatzky.
