The 2020 Shelby GT500: Ford’s most powerful street-legal car to date

If you’re a petrolhead you know the 2019 Detroit Motor Show is currently underway, with a number of carmakers unveiling their all-electric and futuristic looking vehicles.

Ford has deviated slightly from the trend and debuted its most powerful street-legal car to date in the form of the 2020 Shelby GT500.

Giving it that honour is the performance-tuned 5.2 litre V8 engine under the bonnet and produces a mammoth 700-plus BHP, or in excess of 521kW for those of you using the metric system.

Being a newly revealed American car we’re not sure how fast this new Shelby GT500 can do 0-100km/h in, but its 0-60mph is said to be around 3 seconds. It can also do a quarter-mile (0.4km), which is important to drag racing fans out there in under 11 seconds.

Along with the powerful engine the new GT500 is sporting a range of Shelby-branded touches, including the signature cobra on the front grille. It also has a suitably muscular styling with sharp angles, and will be made available in a blue, grey and red colour option with stripes of course.

As you can tell by the name the Shelby GT500 will be hitting roads in the States next year, but pricing and pre-order status remain a mystery. Also unknown is whether other regions across the globe will be getting the muscle car, so we’ll have to wait for word from Ford South Africa.

In the interim watch the 2020 Shelby GT500 in action in the video below.
