The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) announced earlier this week that it will now add a personal care allowance for students who are benefiting from the scheme.

This allowance of R275 per month will cover some of the students toiletry and sanitary needs to ensure that they are not missing class because of a lack of personal care products.

“Young women are often forced to miss classes due to lack of sanitary towels and this impacts on their educational outcomes as well,” said NSFAS administrator, Dr. Randall Carolissen to Sowetan Live.

The introduction of the personal care allowance will benefit more than 800 000 students, and this was introduced after numerous engagements with various stakeholders and students on how the scheme could best assist in issues of personal necessities across the country’s universities and TVET colleges.

“This will be an additional amount which will be added to the current student allowances, the aim is to provide funding to poor and working class student,” added NSFAS spokesperson Kagisho Mamabolo.
