Robbers steal green tech school’s computers one week after opening

Shocking news comes to the township community of Tsakane in the Ekurhuleni municipality as robbers have stolen computers and other electronic goods, just after one week after the official opening of the green technology school, Menzi Primary School.

The incident happened earlier this week and the criminals got away with 185 tablets, eight laptops, two projectors, three desktop computers, a plasma TV, a digital video recorder and R500 in petty cash during the robbery.

“The criminals broke the main vault door to access the keys of the entire school. In all other vaults they opened with keys. Some of the keys were left but the school is checking if there are any other keys missing,” said Gauteng Education spokesperson Steve Mabona to Sowetan Live.

On said day the school had two patrollers that were working the night shift. They were both tied up and locked in a storeroom when the incident happened. They were found by their colleagues when they were reporting for duty the next morning.

“The two patrollers were also robbed of their cellphones. We have opened a case of robbery but no arrests have been made,” said police spokesperson, captain Kay Makhubela.

Pupils in Grade 7, do not have any textbooks, as they were using e-books on their tablets, and the robbers have gotten away with them. This now begs the question as to how those learners will be taught, as this is the most important year of their primary school careers.

“When we opened the school last week we assured the kids of a better future, for once they were going to get quality education in their area without going to private schools in town. Now that future is like a pipe dream as someone decided to steal from these innocent children,” added acting mayor of Ekurhuleni, Lesiba Mpya.

Gauteng Education MEC, Panyaza Lesufi, has described the theft as heartbreaking and has called the community to hunt down the robbers by Friday.

There is no clarity on when the stolen tech will be replaced at this stage, with Lesufi stating that the robbers must first be brought to justice. What learners will do until then, is anyone’s guess.
