Asus RT-AC67U AiMesh AC1900 review – More WiFi is never a bad thing

We’ve been on a quest to spread WiFi throughout our homes for sometime now with our goal being to do that for as little money as possible.

Last year we tested out Asus’ Lyra which was one way to spread internet across your home. The Lyra was simple to use but it was also rather pricey.

Today we’re going to take a look at another DIY WiFi mesh system, once again from ASUS, but this time the system is aimed at users with a bit more networking knowledge.

What is the AiMesh AC1900?

In the time we’ve had the AiMesh AC1900 we’ve lovingly dubbed it the “two pack”. The reason, to put it simply, is that there are two Asus RT-AC67U routers.

These are dual-band gigabit routers and from what we can tell (we only had one pack to test) they are paired together so that setup is much easier.

Speaking of setup, let’s dive into that experience.

We opted to use the Asus Router app on smartphone to set the routers up and it was as simple as it could be.

As with the Lyra, setting up one router will give you the option to add another router to the network with a tap.

The app also allows you to setup passwords, SSIDs, and even manage parental controls which is nice.

This system enables users to add additional routers to the system without much hassle. Once again, we weren’t able to test this properly because we don’t have a third Asus router but adding the second router was really as simple as tapping through the app so we don’t see it becoming a problem when you add more.

The nice thing about the AiMesh is that you can use WiFi or ethernet to connect the two routers to each other. Each router also boasts four gigabit ethernet ports for those that prefer to be wired into the internet.

Does it work and how well?

So on to the testing.

Our peak transfer speed across the network (5GHz) came in at 827Mbps when in the same room as the router while being 10m away from the router gave us transfer speeds of 798Mbps.

This is really good and way better than the speeds we saw while using the Lyra but, these are bigger routers with more features so we expected to see better transfer speeds.

Onto internet speeds.

Much like the Lyra we did notice a slight dip in speeds as we moved from our base router through each Asus router.

That having been said, we never noted our internet speeds falling below 4.91Mbps with the peak internet speed hitting 5.01Mbps.

There is a WAN port as well as four gigabit ethernet ports on each router as well as a USB port.

Conclusion

The Asus AiMesh looks a lot more intimidating than the Lyra but looks can be deceiving.

Set up is simple and if you use the Asus Router app set up is almost mindless.

There was also very little need for us to constantly fuss over maintenance aside from the odd restart.

The functionality is robust for what you’re paying for and the ability to add new routers to the network (so long as they are compatible) is a great selling point especially for a business.

For parents, easy to access and understand app controls making keeping your child safe online just a bit less of a hassle.

The Asus AiMesh is also much cheaper than the Lyra at R4 828 (Evetech) and while you only get two routers here instead of the three in the Lyra, the coverage of this system is incredibly robust and didn’t see any dead spots in our home during testing.

Overall this is a great product for a homeowner or business looking to expand their network.
