Motorola may bring back iconic RAZR as a $1500 foldable smartphone

In the pantheon of great mobile devices, none have captured the heart of South Africans more than the Nokia 3310 and Motorola RAZR.

We’ve already seen a refreshed version of the former thanks to HMD Global, but now we could be receiving an updated iteration of the RAZR from Motorola (which is owned by Lenovo).

Unlike the misleading video from two years ago (pasted below) which seemingly teased a next-gen RAZR but was just a celebration of an anniversary, this latest report comes from the Wall Street Journal (paywall).

Details on the device are slim, but WSJ’s sources say it could cost $1 500 (~R20 593), as well as making its debut as soon as February. With MWC 19 happening late that month, unveiling a new generation of Motorola RAZR might prove a worthwhile venture.

It certainly helped generate plenty of buzz for HMD Global when they debuted the new take on the Nokia 3310.

What could make this RAZR version different from the 3310 though, is the fact that it would be a fully fledged smartphone, according to WSJ.

While the prospect of a RAZR that sports Android and more functionality than your standard feature phone sounds enticing, it may not feature the iconic clamshell design of the original.

To that end, people close to the project say the device could have a foldable display design. Whether that folds into a clamshell type shape remains to be seen, but if Motorola wants to tap into the nostalgia of the original, going for that iconic form factor would make a lot of sense.

There’s been no confirmation from Motorola or Lenovo just yet, but it’s believed that the company aims to sell 200 000 units of the new device. At a reported $1 500 a pop, it’s going to need more than just nostalgia to get people interested in buying it.

With MWC 19 a little over one month away, hopefully more news will be forthcoming.
