Curro’s new college offers an alternative to the National Senior Certificate

The Curro Holdings Group has launched a new private college in Rivonia, Johannesburg. The college will be the first in the group to offer an alternative to the National Senior Certificate (NSC) with the National Certificate Vocational (NCV) and classes will start on 4th February, next month.

The NCV qualification has 18 sub-fields, such as Hospitality, Drawing Office Practice, Mechatronics and Tourism. This qualification has existed since 2008 and is available through public and private colleges, along with being registered with the Department of Higher Education, as well as accredited by Umalusi.

“The NCV can actually be an alternative option for high school learners who want to specialise in a field of interest from school going age, said head of organisational development at Curro, Stoffel Goosen to Business Tech.

The college will offer NCV programmes such as Information Technology, Computer Sciences, Finance, Economics and Accounting. Classes will start from 08:00 until 17:00, and there will be support staff available from 06:30 to 18:30.

Learners need to have completed and passed Grade Nine to enter into Level 2 of the NCV. Level 2, 3 and 4 are the same as Grade Eight, Nine and 10., with Level 4 is the same as the NSC matric qualification. This qualification enables you to study further into any higher education institute such as TVET colleges, universities and university of technology.

“NCV is not an easy option in comparison to the NSC, the focus is rather on practical, vocational training in addition to core academic subjects such as Language, Mathematics/ Mathematical Literacy and Life Orientation. The NCV enables students to select a career path in vocational fields,” concluded Goosen.
