2.3 million-plus young Africans learnt digital skills in Africa Code Week 2018

SAP has developed and implemented initiatives aimed at fostering digital skills development among South Africa’s youth over the past few years, and one of its important initiatives has been Africa Code Week.

Last year Africa Code Week saw more than 2.3 million youth across 37 countries taking place in basic coding. It focused on building local capacity for substantial learning which resulted in almost 23 000 teachers being trained in the run up to the October 2018 events.

Africa Code Week’s goals go hand in hand with the UN Development Goals, which is to ensure quality and inclusive education for all. This programme encourages female participation in STEM related skills development in particular, and last year it has seen 46 percent of all Africa Code Week participants being female.

This initiative also has close support from a broad spectrum of public and private sector institutions such as, UNESCO YouthMobile, Google, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the Cape Town Science Centre and the Camden Education Trust.

“We require powerful public and private partnerships to start turning the tide and creating more equitable opportunities for African youth, to contribute to the continent’s economic development and success,” noted Africa Code Week global coordinator, Sunil Geness.
