Department of Education to probe 2018 matric Business Studies exam results

The Department of Education will launch an investigation into the matric 2018 final exams for Business Studies.

This is after a complaint was lodged by the principal of Oakridge College in Durban North, where he conducted his own research and reported a drop in Business Studies marks in the matric final exams.

The SA Teachers Union also brought the concerns of schools in KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and Gauteng to the attention of the Department. The Union threatened to take legal action against the Department if it failed to divulge information regarding the marking process, the adjustments of marks and incorporation of the school based assessment marks.

“We have received a letter that reads almost the same as the one we got from the DA. What we find interesting is that the complaints come mainly from a certain group of people representing a certain section of society,” said the Department’s spokesperson, Elijah Mhlanga, to IOL News.

Nationally 192 139 learners wrote the Business Studies exam and 64.9 percent passed, while in KwaZulu-Natal  51 588 learners wrote the exam and 59.5 percent passed the paper.

While the investigations were underway, some of the pupils affected and already accepted at universities told Daily News that they were left with no choice but to apply for remarking, because they feared the investigation would take too long.
