Minister of Basic Education calls for diversified education system

Earlier this week the third annual Basic Education Lekgotla kicked off in Boksburg, Ekurhuleni.

Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga, hosted the event, with this year’s theme being “Equipping learners with the knowledge and skills for changing the world.”

The Minister addressed the attendees and noted that the current system needs to be amended to allow students to diversify their curriculum for high school through to the tertiary level.

“For the gifted kids we have very limited opportunities in terms of exit points. As teenagers they already know what they want, their talents are quite clear, but our system is still very colonial, British, academic,” said Motshekga to EWN News.

The Education Lekgotla is a platform for researchers and experts to present their findings on relevant education issues affecting the country and looks at the best possible chance at succeeding in the fast changing global environment.

Added to this is looking into the development measures to promote good governance in schools, effective teacher development programmes and the utilisation of information and communication technologies in schools.

Motshekga also touched on the issue of South African syllabus lagging behind when compared with its international counterparts.

President Ramaphosa was also present at the event and touched on some important issues in the current education system.

Some of these subjects included early childhood development, developing and implementing a comprehensive strategy on improving reading, promoting inclusivity, efficiency and quality, strengthening care and support for learners and developing capabilities in data analytics, coding, the Internet of Things and blockchain technology.
