As the 2019 academic year has already began, parents are still left wandering around to find placements for their children in Gauteng schools, as the Gauteng Department of Education says there are more than 20 000 pupils who forfeited their placement offers at available schools.

The department says it received 40 304 late applications last week, with 17 686 of those applications being accepted to placements.

“The 22 618 late applications that did not submit correct documents, forfeited their placement offers by 12:00 on 18th January 2019,” said a Department spokesperson to News24.

When the online application process opened in April last year, around 300 000 people applied and the highest demand was for Grade 1 pupils with 150 000 applications and Grade 8 with 133 000 applications.

In addition to that the Department had to extend their application deadline in 2019 for placement for Grade 1 and Grade 8 pupils because more than 6 000 pupils had not been placed.

“This reflects 1 217 additional placements in 2019. Thus, the department receives a steady annual increase in learner numbers, which has resulted in overcrowding in some schools,” concluded the Department spokesperson.
