Huawei launches Balong 5000 5G multi-mode chipset

Huawei held an event earlier today where the focus was its plans for 5G.

More specifically the company revealed a pair of offerings – the Balong 5000 chipset and 5G CPE Pro base station.

Huawei views this new chipset as opening up the era of 5G for the Chinese company, and coupled with the new base station aims to deliver the new level of broadband connectivity to more consumers.

“It [Balong 5000] will enable everything to sense, and will provide the high-speed connections needed for pervasive intelligence. Powered by the Balong 5000, the Huawei 5G CPE Pro enables consumers to access networks more freely and enjoy an incredibly fast connected experience. Huawei has an integrated set of capabilities across chips, devices, cloud services, and networks,” explained Huawei Consumer Business Group CEO Richard Yu.

The Balong 5000 is designed in a single chip, and is panned for implementation in smaller form factor devices like smartphones. Supporting 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G broadband standards, Huawei also revealed some of the figures on its own testing of the chipset.

Working on the sub-6GHz, they say the Balong 5000 can achieve download speeds of 4.6Gbps. These speeds can rise to 6.5Gbps, according to the company, when operating on a higher frequency mmWave spectrum.

Added to the myriad features on the Balong 5000, Huawei also claims that it’s the first chip to support both standard and non-standard 5G network architectures.

With the Chinese firm having a strong presence locally, the wait is now on to see when government will make the necessary spectrum available for 5G technologies. Hopefully hardware like the Balong 5000 and 5G CPE Pro will help in this regard.

For now there’s no word on when both offerings will be launching in South Africa, but perhaps more information will be forthcoming following MWC 19 in late February.
