The Walking Dead’s Rick Grimes is now a 3D printed and articulated action figure

Despite the popularity of The Walking Dead, we haven’t seen many projects based on it coming out of the maker community. Well that changes today with this impressive 3D printed and articulated action figure of Rick Grimes.

Thomas Davis – who goes by 3DofTom online – tells us that he used ZBrush and Modo to create the model here. Modo was used in the early stages of shaping and creation of the joints, with ZBrush used for the rest.

Davis collected a slew of screenshots to use as reference, wanting to recreate his look from season 4 of the show.

The articulation here was helped along by using a Boss Fight Studio character blank as inspiration for how the joints should fit together.

The modelling process together with some test printing took around two weeks to complete, but Davis says that he used a bunch of his existing models to speed the process along here.

Printing only took around five hours to complete as this print only stands around four inches (10.16 centimetres) tall when assembled. Despite the short stature here, the 27 individual printed parts here took up the majority of the build plate on the Form 2 SLA printer as all the individual pieces need a lot of supports.

After some sanding super glue helped join broken pieces that snapped when inserting the tight ball joints. Those looking to make their own version of this project should try and use a filament that isn’t too brittle.

The print was then primed and painted using acrylics. A dark wash was then applied and highlights were done. The final touch was some blood splatter accomplished by loading up a brush with red paint and flicking it onto the print.

If you’d like to make your own Rick Grimes action figure, the files to do so are available for free from MyMiniFactory.

One MyMiniFactory user Craig Hancock has already made his own, and you can see his version of the print with a different paint job.
