Twitter trialling Original Tweeter tag for threads

Twitter is testing out a new feature that could finally bring some resolution to the platform when it comes to threads, and in particular who started the tread.

It’s called “Original Tweeter” with a tag of the same name appearing next to the tweet that begun a specific thread.

You can see an example of this in the embedded thread below.

According to TechCrunch, which reached out to Twitter for comment on this newly trialled feature, with the social media platform noting that it’s designed to help curate conversations in a better fashion.

“Twitter’s purpose is to serve the public conversation. As part of this work, we’re exploring adding more context to discussions by highlighting relevant replies – like those from the original Tweeter,” explained director of product management, Sara Haider, in a statement to TechCrunch.

The Original Tweeter tag could also serve to distinguish genuine tweets from ones made by fake accounts, which too is becoming an issue on Twitter, especially for more high-profile users on the platform.

For now this feature has only been rolled out to a small percentage of users on the iOS and Android version of the app in select regions. Whether Twitter decides to make it a fully fledged part of their platform remains to be seen, however, with no further indication of when that would be if it gets a good response from the community.
