Second chance Matric exam registration deadline is 31st January 2019

Students who wish to rewrite their National Senior Certificate (NSC) in June this year, have until 31st January 2019 to register.

The second chance programme is intended for all students who have failed their 2018 Matric exams, or have not completed it, and also for those who wish to improve their results.

“As the Department of Basic Education, we would encourage all of those who qualify to take advantage of this extraordinary opportunity to attain a matric certificate, which could be the gateway to a better life,” said a spokesperson.

Conditions for entry

  • Students can only register for subjects which they were registered for in the previous November examinations.
  • Students who opt for the multiple examinations opportunity (MEO) option need to complete the outstanding subjects in the NSC June exams.
  • Students who were absent with a valid reason (medical unfit, death in the immediate family or other special reasons, from one or more external question papers.
  • Students who want to improve their overall achievement status, or only want to improve the achievement of a subject, may register including MEO students.
  • In the case where a leaner was absent for one or more paper in the November exam with valid reason, the learner has a choice on whether to write only the outstanding papers or all papers.
  • In the case were an irregularity is being investigated, provisional enrolment for NSC June examinations may be granted to the candidate concerned, pending the outcome of the investigation.
  • Learners who were unable to write or complete one or more of the NSC November examinations question papers for reason other than illness/injury or death in the family, may apply to write the NSC June examination, provided that a written report is submitted by the principal of the school to the Head of the assessment body.

Learners can visit the Department of Basic Education website to register for Amended Senior Certificate examinations, or they can visit their nearest district education office to register in person.
