IEC says 9 million eligible people are still not registered to vote

The Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has seen more than 80 percent of people younger than 30 years old register in the final week of registration.

But the IEC is still concerned that about the 9 million eligible voters who are not registered, with 6 million of those under the age of 30.

“The overall registration level remains high by international standards for countries with a voluntary registration period,” said IEC chairperson, Glen Mashinini.

According to the IEC, the current voters roll reflected a total of 74.5 percent of eligible population. Over the final voter registration weekend 703 794 people had registered, combining the registration from the March 2018 weekend to make 1 194 314 new names registered ahead of the upcoming elections, added chief electoral officer, Sy Mamabolo.

The Constitutional Court last year granted the IEC until November to add addresses to the names listed on the voters roll, with over 140 000 new addresses added to the roll. In total 21.5 million people have added their addresses compared to the 8.4 million in April 2016, according to the IEC.

“The constitutional court had made it clear that, before people were given ballot paper, officials should take down their address and add it to the roll,” concluded Mamabolo.
