Study finds cybersecurity execs feel isolated from the rest of the firm

A recent survey commissioned by Trend Micro reveals that IT executives feel a lack of support from company leaders.

The survey drew responses from 1 125 IT decision makers in the UK, US, Germany, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Finland, France, Netherlands, Poland, Belgium and Czech Republic.

Of those respondents 33 percent feel isolated from the rest of the company in their role.

The survey also revealed that 34 percent of folks responsible for cybersecurity are feeling the burden of their position and job satisfaction has decreased over the last 12 month period.

Contributing to this job dissatisfaction are the challenges cybsecurity staff face on a daily basis. Among these challenges are prioritising emerging threats and keeping track of an – often – fractured security environment.

“As cyber-attacks increase in volume and sophistication, accountability needs to be shared. No business can afford for the IT function to be an island, because it will inevitably buckle. This means shifting the mindset from cybersecurity being a standalone initiative to a shared responsibility across an organization,” principal security strategist at Trend Micro, Bharat Mistry explained.

Communication also appears to be a bugbear for IT staff with 44 percent saying they struggle to communicate complex threats to leadership.

However, respondents also said that this communication becomes easier in the wake of a cyberattack. Of course, that’s not really helpful because you really ought to be preventing attacks and not gasping in awe at how they were executed.

“IT professionals need to find ways to communicate the value of having security expertise embedded across the breadth of the organization. They could also strive to learn more from other business leaders about how they can better communicate risk, so they can make sure cybersecurity is front of mind in every department,” concludes Mistry.
