Astron Energy initiative helping Cape Town students in Science and Maths

Astron Energy together with Cape Town Science Centre is aiming to help students achieve their best marks for Science and Mathematics, with its after school tutoring, matric exam preparation and curriculum focused school group visits.

“This programme started in 2016 with the aim of providing relevant support to these schools and inspiring learners in our community to want to learn and achieve more, the momentum we are creating by investing in these 21 schools is a consistent, ongoing, multi- activity and practical manner, helps build a pipeline of future inspiring minds,” said head of policy, government and public affairs at Astron, Jill Koopman.

The Astron Energy Schools Programme supports 21 schools in total, of which 10 are high schools and 11 primary schools, in the communities surrounding their refinery in Milnerton, Cape Town.

According to the company, various initiatives are implemented in theses schools to boost Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects.

“Collaborative partnerships that make these opportunities available to learners is what is urgently needed as we head into yet another challenging academic year. There are increasing learner drop-out rates in physical science and its imperative to provide support, both within and outside the classroom. The way we teach is as important as what we teach, a hands on holistic learning experience is consistently proven to be most effective,”  added director of Cape Town Science Centre, Julie Cleverdon.

Even though the matric class of 2018 did well by achieving a 78.2 percent pass rate, when it comes to the Maths and Science department, the pass mark declined to 51.5 percent of students passing Maths and 61 percent passing Science. Initiatives such as Astron Energy will help in increasing the pass marks for Maths and Science in the future.
