Samsung develops industry’s first 1TB eUFS storage for smartphones

Late last year Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Note 9, which featured 512GB worth of onboard storage and a microSD slot for a further 512GB.

At the time the South Korean manufacturer boasted about the fact that users could have 1TB of storage at their disposal on their smartphone, but that of course necessitated buying a 512GB microSD card.

That may soon not be necessary as Samsung has unveiled a new storage offering for smartphones, with the industry’s first 1TB embedded Universal Flash Storage (eUFS) chipset.

Along with circumventing the need for buying large microSD cards for additional storage capacity, this new chip naturally opens up the ability for users to record and store more video content on their smartphone. According to Samsung, their 1TB chipset is capable of storing up to 260 10-minute long videos at 4K UHD quality.

“The 1TB eUFS is expected to play a critical role in bringing a more notebook-like user experience to the next generation of mobile devices,” said Cheol Choi, executive vice president of Memory Sales & Marketing at Samsung Electronics.

“What’s more, Samsung is committed to assuring the most reliable supply chain and adequate production quantities to support the timely launches of upcoming flagship smartphones in accelerating growth of the global mobile market,” adds Choi.

Delving deeper into the features of the chipset, Samsung adds that it can muster up to 1 000MBps transfer speeds, along with boasting twice the sequential of a standard 2.5″ SATA solid slate drive.

The firm says such speeds will allow users to transfer a 5GB-sized video in five seconds. Furthermore it can clock up to 58 000 Input/Output Operations Per Second (IOPS), which is 38 percent greater than the company’s previous generation of 512GB chipset.

Samsung has already greenlit the manufacture of the chipsets throughout the first half of 2019, but has stayed mum on when consumers will be able to experience on one of their devices.

With the Galaxy S10 set to debut on 20th February, perhaps it will be the first.
