Where to watch (and listen to) the State of the Nation Address 2019

The annual State of the Nation Address (SONA) is taking place in Cape Town this evening.

The president is set to address the nation at 7PM this evening with a broadcast available on DStv channel 408, SABC TV and eNCA. The speech will also be broadcast on SABC radio stations.

For those that aren’t near a TV or a radio you can stream the speech live on Parliament’s YouTube channel.

That having been said that stream can vary in quality so we’ll be updating this story at the time of the speech to include as many livestreams of SONA 2019 as possible.

The red carpet event kicks off at 3PM and the stream has been embedded below.

Last year at this time the nation was debating whether or not former president Jacob Zuma would step down as president and as you might recall, he did.

This caused something of a delay while the ANC managed “issues of political transition” as current president Cyril Ramaphosa put it.

During his first year at the helm Ramaphosa has made good on some of the points he mentioned which pertain to technology.

There has been movement in the promise of the establishing of a Digital Industrial Revolution Commission. The call for nominations to serve on the commission was issued in December. We’d like to here more about this commission and perhaps hear what the goals of it are.

We’d also like to see how far along government is with freeing up spectrum and we’re sure a few mobile network providers will be waiting for mention of that.

The good news is that the theme of this year’s address is “Following up on our commitments: Making Your Future Work Better” so we’re hopeful that the address will be more meaty than Ramaphosa’s first.

As for the disruptions that have marred previous SONA speeches and delayed them by hours, we’ll have to see whether parliament is feeling rambunctious after its break or not.

We’re hoping things go smoothly though.
