President Ramaphosa announces five urgent tasks government will work on

South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa, delivered his second State of the Nation Address (SONA) in the National Assembly last night, were he announced urgent tasks that the government should address in the year ahead.

The urgent issues are:

  • Accelerating inclusive economic growth and creating jobs.
  • Improving the education system and developing the skills that are needed.
  • Improving the conditions of life for all South Africans, especially the poor.
  • Intensifying the fight against corruption and state capture.
  • The need to strengthen the capacity of the state to address the needs of the people.

“Over the past year, we have focused our efforts on accelerating inclusive growth, significantly increasing levels of investment and putting in place measure to create more jobs,” said Ramaphosa.

During his SONA address, the President announced an economic stimulus and recovery plan to redirect to the areas with the greatest potential for growth and job creation.

He added that in order to stimulate the economy there is a need for more businesses to be built and employ more people, also South Africa needed to find larger markets for its goods and services.

“We introduce a range of measures to ignite economic activity, restore investor confidence, support employment and address the urgent challenges that affect the lives of vulnerable members of our society,” concluded the President.
