South African Student Union calling for national shutdown of universities

This week various universities abruptly stopped academic learning around the country due to student protests, where students are demanding accommodation and free education among other issues.

Now the South African Union of Students (SAUS) has called for a national shutdown of the higher education sector. SAUS is an elected body from SRCs across the country and serves as a student lobby group in higher education.

“We declare a National shutdown from this Thursday (07/02/2019) until the plight of the poor student and black student is taken into account and that our demands at a national level and the institutional demands that speak to the immediate challenges of students are addressed,” said SAUS in a media statement.

SAUS also condemned the killing of students in an incident that happened earlier this week where a student at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) was shot and killed by private security during a protest.

“We call for an urgent inquiry into the matter and institutional and personal accountability for the matter,” added the Union.

The Union also addressed the issue, were Minister of Higher Education, Naledi Pandor, spoke on national radio about the student issues, saying that she wouldn’t call what is happening at the institutions a crisis but a worrying development.

“As a result of her unfortunate utterances, she has implicitly granted university management in collusion with relentless private mercenaries to harass, manhandle, dehumanise and massacre students for begging for access and success in institutions of higher learning,” concluded SAUS.
