Students of AFDA will have their short films screened on Showmax

With all the bad news surrounding Eskom here’s a slice of good news from two local companies.

Showmax has announced that it has partnered with local film and stage educational institution AFDA to stream the work of students.

Come 18th February, as many as 18 short films from AFDA students will be available on Showmax.

“It’s ground-breaking to share young, local, culturally relevant content on the same platform as Hollywood blockbusters. I am certain that this unique initiative will serve to boost and develop the African film industry and the careers of many young South African and African students alike,” chief executive officer at AFDA, Teresa Passchier said of the partnership.

This is also a smart move on the part of Showmax. The recently release The Girl from St. Agnes received rave reviews and what better way to tap into local talent than giving them a space to showcase said talent.

We should also point out that AFDA won an Oscar back in 2006 for Elalini in the Best Foreign Student Film category.

“There’s immense depth of filmmaking talent in Africa and it’s a privilege to be able to give that talent a home and a platform. Showmax is becoming part of the fabric of film and TV production in Africa, and importantly we’re doing this as a partner rather than just as a consumer. This is a key competitive advantage of being local and something we aim to continue to work on,” head of content at Showmax, Candice Fangueiro said.
