Webafrica warns of internet outages due to load shedding

Those who get their internet from Webafrica – or potentially many other ISPs – may be left without internet due to the recent and widespread load shedding which has just hit South Africa.

Webafrica customers have just received an email warning them that they may be disconnected due to these problems.

“Several of our underlying infrastructure providers are reporting that their networks are being impacted by load shedding,” The email reads, “They are working towards sustainable solutions to ensure your internet comes back up as quickly as possible once power is reinstated.”

The message also provides a note stating that internet services may be disrupted up to two hours after the electricity has been restored.

The email ends with some instructions about what to do if your router does not function correctly following a loss of power. If the lights on your box don’t turn on, it may have been blown and you should email the company to get it sorted out.

This bit even comes with a joke from Webafrica, calling a router blown by load shedding “Eskomed”.

“Please have your ‘Eskomed’ router ready for collection when the driver drops off your replacement router (if you reside in JHB, PTA, DBN, CPT). In all other areas your router will need to be couriered and may incur a delivery fee.”

Jokes aside all of this is worrying news. Even if you or your company have invested in a generator, these problems mean that you may be disconnected even with the lights on.

With Eskom holding a six hour meeting to address the power problems this morning, the country may be in for a rough near future.
