14 Movies to Stream this Valentine’s Day

The mood in South Africa at the moment isn’t particularly loving – considering Eskom’s continued load shedding – but this week is Valentine’s Day, which should serve as a nice break from the anger and frustration.

Seeing as how power isn’t a certainty at the moment, it may be worthwhile turning to streaming platforms to download and enjoy some movies this February the 14th when the lights are out.

With that in mind, we’ve selected 14 movies (available at the time of writing) for you to either stream or download from Netflix, Showmax and black.

Netflix

The reigning king of streaming services, Netflix has a number of movies perfect for streaming this Valentine’s Day. Facilitating both streaming and downloading, along with having a large catalogue, there’s plenty to enjoy on Netflix.

Crazy Stupid Love (2011)

If you’re a particularly confident man, and can handle your significant other staring at a shirtless Ryan Gosling, then Crazy Stupid Love is well worth watching on the 14th. It also stars a bunch of our favourite acting talents like Steve Carell, Julianne Moore and Emma Stone.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (2010)

Something for comic book fans has recently appeared on Netflix in the form of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Packed with a league of evil exes, a great soundtrack and plenty of references to the eponymous graphic novel series, it’s a nice change of pace from the usual Valentine’s Day films.

To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before (2018)

A Netflix original, this film is in the same vein as other teen romances, and should resonate for anyone whose loved someone from a distance, but never had it reciprocated. If you’re into dear diary sort of movies, this one is for you.

Flavours of Youth (2018)

Another Netflix original, Flavours of Youth is an anime project brought to us by the same team behind smash hit Your Name. It tells three separate stories spread out in different Chinese cities, with each touching on a unique aspect of love.

Shakespeare in Love (1998)

You know who knew about love? Old Bill Shakespeare. In this Academy award-winning reimagining of his life, Joseph Fiennes and Gwyneth Paltrow give superb performances. There’s also one of the oddest British accents ever by Ben Affleck to provide a few laughs too.

Showmax

Another streaming platform that’s grown in popularity since debuting locally a couple of years ago is Showmax. Allowing users to download movies and series, as well as featuring a handy 14-day free trial for newcomers, Showmax is a solid option for those first time streamers.

Notting Hill (1999)

“I’m just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love me.” Need we say more about this great love story starring Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant. A special shoutout needs to go to Rhys Ifans’ Welsh oddball character Spike.

Me Before You (2016)

If you’re a Game of Thrones fan and need some Khaleesi, Emilia Clarke stars in this touching love story. Oh, Sam Claflin also features as the co-lead. Some people say he’s handsome.

Ghost (1990)

Is there a more iconic pottery making scene in the history of cinema than the one in Ghost? We think not. Demi Moore and Whoopi Goldberg are great in this film, but it’s all about Patrick Swayze. RIP.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)

Not your conventional love story, Eternal Sunshine is a visually stunning piece of work from Michel Gondry. Jim Carrey also delivers a superb performance as Joel, showcasing why he’s more than just an over-the-top comedic actor.

The English Patient (1996)

This film starring Kristin Scott Thomas and Ralph Fiennes is more than just a beautifully tragic love story, it’s perhaps one of the best films in recent memory. The story, the performances, the directing, all culminate in a truly great film.

black

One of the more recent additions to the local scene is black, which is a Cell C-powered offering. There’s unfortunately no download facility, but users can opt to either rent or buy films and series, which could prove a more cost savvy option this Valentine’s Day.

A Star is Born (2018)

Generating plenty of Oscar buzz, and already nabbing a few awards for its soundtrack, A Star is Born features Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, with the former also helming things behind the camera. Add this one to the tragic love story pile.

The Notebook (2004)

It wouldn’t be a Valentine’s Day list without mentioning the Notebook. Gosling. McAdams. Lots of rain. What else does a lovesick couple need on Valentine’s Day? Sorry that was a rhetorical question.

Drinking Buddies (2013)

Another unconventional Valentine’s Day pick, Drinking Buddies looks at two couples, both of whom appear to be mismatched. With love being far from straightforward and easy, this film perfectly highlights the dysfunctional aspects of modern relationships.

Fifty Shades of Grey (2015)

If the kids are tucked away for bed, you could opt for something a bit steamier for Valentine’s Day in the form of Fifty Shades of Grey. Are the performances strong? No, but there are a lot of naked bodies on-screen, if that’s your thing.
