TUT campuses suspend academic activities after protests break out

Two weeks ago protests broke out at four universities in KZN and academic activities were suspended. Now the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) has also suspended academic activities at four of their campuses, which are Pretoria, GaRankuwa, eMalahleni and Mbombela, due to student protests.

“The university apologises for the inconvenience of the suspension of activities may cause and would like to advise students and other stakeholders to visit our website for updated information on the way forward, said TUT spokesperson,” Willa De Ruyter told News24.

According to the EFF Students Command, Kingsley Baloyi, students were protesting as they were fed up with being undermined by the University’s management, who refuse to take their demands seriously. He also added that first year students were given a R5 000 book allowance while senior students were given a R2 500 allowance.

“Senior students felt the discrepancy was unfair and created unnecessary animosity between student groups. Students will not stop until those who had been financially excluded were also absorbed and allowances of R5 000 had been paid to all,” added Baloyi.

The University said that eMalahleni campus remained closed as a result of disruptions experienced on Monday, while the Arcadia and Arts campus also suspended academic activities.

“Disruptions at the Pretoria campus are being monitored. Staff and students at the affected campuses will be advised immediately when normal university activities are set to resume,” concluded De Ruyter.
