The African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) in Tshwane issued a warning to the Government earlier this week, if it fails to respond to students’ demand that historical debt be scrapped.

Members of the Youth League and the Progressive Youth Alliance marched from Burgers Park to the Department of Higher Education and Training, in Tshwane to demand that the government allows students to register regardless of outstanding fees.

According to EWN, the ANCYL says that all tertiary institutions in the capital will be shut down if the government doesn’t respond before Friday 15th February, as the registration period closes on that day at most institutions. The students also called on government to respect TVET colleges instead of treating them as overflow facilities for universities.

“We have taken the decision that if we don’t get a response, on Monday we are going to shut down all campuses in Tshwane. There’s no university that’s going to function, we will close all of them down, and there is no TVET college that is going to function,” Tshwane regional chairperson, Lesego Makhubela, told EWN.
