Stage 2 load shedding announced for Valentine’s Day

We’re going to have a dark Valentine’s Day this year as Eskom announces this morning that Stage 2 load shedding will be taking place.

Stage 2 load shedding calls for 2 000MW of power to be rotationally shed across South Africa and today it’s expected to last from 08:00 through to 22:00.

Once again, the reason Eskom gives for implementing load shedding is a shortage of capacity.

Today marks the fifth consecutive day of load shedding in South Africa and follows on from news that Eskom is technically insolvent.

The utility’s debt currently stands at R420 billion and should it continue along it’s current trajectory Eskom is unlikely to exist come April.

In his SONA last week, president Cyril Ramaphosa proposed the splitting of Eskom into three separate entities in a bid to ease the financial burden faced by the utility as well as improve operations.

With load shedding making a sudden reappearance a few days later, folks began speculating that this was sabotage, most notably acting ANC spokesperson Zizi Kodwa.

Today during his reply to the SONA debate which has been happening all week, Ramaphosa will reportedly announce further steps as regards Eskom.

For now check your load shedding schedules and take a look at our list of streamable movies for Valentine’s Day. Remember that both Showmax and Netflix allow you to download certain titles for viewing offline.
