Huawei P Smart 2019 Review: Revamped for the new year

Huawei has been busy over the past twelve months releasing smartphone after smartphone, each aimed at different segments of the market. The Chinese brand’s latest addition is the revamped Huawei P Smart 2019, which was announced in December 2018 and made available in South Africa earlier this month.

This new iteration is a successor to last year’s P Smart, and while it might have a similar name, this device is packing improvements across the board compared to its predecessor.

This phone is available locally in both midnight black and aurora blue colour options, with our review unit coming in the far more vibrant aurora flavour.

Upgraded design

The Huawei P Smart is sporting an entirely new look and feel compared to last year’s version, with a mixture of metal and glass similar to the flagship phones the company has been released recently.,

The has glass edges that mould the phone all around. The P Smart feels good in the hand, and despite featuring a lot of  glass, the phone does not slide or slip easily and has a good deal of tactileness.

Also on the back cover comes two main cameras, but more about those later, as well as a fingerprint sensor button. The reason for the latter is because the P Smart 2019 does not have a physical home button up front. The result is that there is more screen real estate to create the all-screen design that so many manufacturers are aiming for these days.

As for other buttons on the phone,  power and the volume rocker are placed at the right side of the phone and can be easily accessible with one hand. The P Smart 2019 also has as a tear drop notch, which looks a lot better than the previous screen notches that Huawei has been using for its phones recently.

Bigger, better display

The P Smart 2019 comes with a 6.21″ display and 1 080 X 2 340 resolution. Said screen is an LCD capacitive construction, with its large dimensions making it possible to truly enjoy  all your videos and photos clearly. Despite featuring a 6 inch-plus display, this smartphone is still quite compact as it weighs 160g and is 8mm thick As a result it’s not heavy and feels lightweight in comparison to other mid-range phones..

When it comes to battery life, the P Smart 2019 comes with a 3 400 mAh battery that does hold up for the whole day, even if you are always on your phone. Should you find yourself low on power, the P Smart 2019’s battery is fully chargeable within a relatively short time of approximately one hour and 30 minutes.

Two cameras are better than one

As mentioned earlier the primary camera setup on the P Smart 2019 features a dual lens design – 13 MP and 2 MP. The former takes care of most things, with the latter designed to add depth of field to images, which is particularly important when taking portraits and trying to get the coveted bokeh effect.

This main camera setup delivers solid images for the most part, but we did find that it struggles at times when trying to snap pictures at night.

The front facing camera on the P Smart 2019 features a single 16MP lens. The like the rear option it’s good in outdoor conditions but isn’t as good in low light conditions, with the lack of LED flash likely contributing to this.

What’s inside?

Huawei P Smart 2019 comes with HiSilicon Kirin 710 octa-core processor, 3GB RAM and 64GB internal storage. This is the same processor that Huawei opted for in the more expensive Mate 20 Lite, which means the P Smart 2019 is on par with most mid-range devices on the market.

The result is that switching between apps and multitasking is done smoothly and without fuss. This fact is also supported by our benchmark test with the P Smart 2019 scoring a solid 129 303 on Antutu.

When it comes to processing performance then, the Huawei P Smart 2019 isn’t going to let you down.

Selling for a recommended R4 999, the Huawei P Smart is very reasonable when compared to other Android smartphones. What makes it particularly good value for money is that it features specifications and components that one may see in more expensive mid-range phones. As such you’re getting far more bang for your buck.

FULL DISCLOSURE: THE HUAWEI P SMART 2019 WAS RECIEVED AS A SEEDING UNIT.
