This website creates an image of a human face from scratch

Here’s a question, do you trust your eyes?

We’re not asking how good your vision is but rather if seeing something gives you grounds to believe it?

If you answered yes, take a gander at the below image.

She seems innocuous enough, of course the quality of the image doesn’t seem that good but that’s because of one special fact – this image was created by an artificial intelligence.

We’ve seen something like this before in DeepFakes although in that application faces of real people could be swapped out for faces of others. This AI is an entirely new beast.

The code that made this possible is known as StyleGAN and it was written by Nvidia according to a report by Inverse.

The website thispersondoesnotexist.com was reportedly created by Uber software engineer Phillip Wang.

“I have decided to dig into my own pockets and raise some public awareness for this technology,” Wang wrote in a Facebook post.

“Faces are most salient to our cognition, so I’ve decided to put that specific pre-trained model up.”

Each time the site is refreshed it will generate a new facial image from scratch.

While there a number of images that look incredibly believable the AI isn’t perfect and it can create some incredibly strange images.

Either this person’s top is the same colour as the wall or the AI messed up.

For now we highly recommend heading to the website and ogling the various images the AI generates.

With AI getting good at writing fake news and now this bizarre recreation of human faces we’re starting to dread the future just a little bit. We’ll admit it’s exciting but we’re also wary of how this technology could be misused.

For now though, it’s fun trying to find where the AI messed up with its facial generation.
