LG reportedly won’t be launching a foldable phone anytime soon

A couple of years ago, it seemed like it would be a race between LG and Samsung as to who would be the first to debut a smartphone with a foldable display.

Fast forward to today and Samsung is readying to reveal their device this week, but it doesn’t look like LG is in the same position.

According to a report from The Korea Times, LG has no plans in place to release said foldable phone anytime soon, with the company said to be taking a more cautious approach to see how the market reacts.

“During the Consumer Electronics Show in January, LG introduced a rollable TV. This is an advanced technology one step ahead of foldable technology. We have reviewed releasing the foldable smartphone when launching 5G smartphone but decided not to produce it,” said Kwon Bong-seok, LG’s president and mobile communications head to The Korea Times.

“The market demand for smartphones is expected to be at around 1 million but LG’s main issue in smartphone business is to regain its market position. Considering this situation, it is too early for LG to launch a foldable smartphone. In terms of technology, we are fully ready to respond depending on consumers’ reactions [to foldable smartphones],” he added.

Whether this wait and see approach pays dividends remains to be seen, with the likes of Huawei, Lenovo and ZTE also said to have foldable devices headed to MWC 19 next week.

As such a burgeoning technology where LG was leading, could soon be flooded with competitors, leaving the company playing catch-up.

That said, we still have no idea how consumers will react to foldable phones, and perhaps LG’s plans is to learn from the mistakes of its peers and perfect their device before hitting the market.

Either way, we shouldn’t be expected a foldable phone from LG in the next few months, or even this year.
