Minister Pandor says Dept working hard to resolve university housing issues

Late last week, the Minister of Higher Education and Training, Naledi Pandor, had a meeting in front of the Parliament Portfolio Committee with the Student Representative Committee (SRC) presidents, the South African Union of Students (SAUS), the CEO of Universities South Africa (USAf) and the administrator of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), with regards to the student protests that have been happening around the country.

Since the beginning of registrations earlier this month, student protests have erupted in universities around the country, stating grievances such as student accommodation as well as free education. Students later said that the Minister did not take their grievances seriously.

“I would like to correct the misunderstanding that I do not take seriously the matters that students have raised with me. That is not the case,” Pandor told News24.

The Minister then said that her Department was working hard to resolve the current student accommodation crisis at universities.

“Addressing student accommodation is a priority of government through support from the Infrastructure and Efficiency Grant (IEG) for student accommodation and other infrastructure projects,” concluded Pandor.
