DUT’s Durban campuses have again suspended academic activities

Earlier this month student protests broke out in four universities in KwaZulu-Natal and academic learning was suspended.

This week the Minister of Higher Education and Training, Naledi Pandor, asked all students to resume their academic learning. This is not the case for the Durban University of Technology’s (DUT) Durban campuses, however, as all academic activities have been suspended once again.

The suspension comes after protests were still continuing outside Durban campuses while the university management and Student Representative Council (SRC) were still discussing the issues brought forward by the students on Monday morning.

“While we increased the security presence in Durban, student protesters still disturbed classes, intimidating staff and students and the protestors violated the rights of others by publicly issuing threats against members of the DUT community,” said the Institution.

According to the university, SRC members from the DUT Midlands campus, were satisfied with the progress made in addressing their issues and wanted lecturers to continue in the Indumiso and Riverside campuses in Pietermaritzburg.

“Although the suspension of the academic programme in Durban is disappointing, the university cannot jeopardise the safety and security of all staff and students. The unacceptable levels of intimidation are not conducive to a learning environment,” concluded DUT.
