TUT students are still in a standoff with university management

Earlier this week universities around the country were expected to resume with their academic learning, after students protests erupted country-wide over accommodation and historic debt issues.

But Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) student leaders and management are still in the midst of a standoff, and there is no end in sight, after a meeting that took place yesterday.

“Academic activities for students at the pretoria, Arts, Arcadia, Ga-Rankuwa, eMalahleni and Mbombela campuses remained suspended until further notice,” TUT spokesperson, Willa de Ruyter, told IOL.

According to de Ruyter, without wanting to antagonise the students, the university had obtained a court interdict to help normalise the situation and ensure the resumption of academic activities. The university also extended the registration for all students by five working days.

“During the meeting it was impressed on the student leaders that the academic project was under severe pressure and should resume without any further disruptions,” concluded de Ruyter.
