Valve has retired the video section of Steam

Here’s something most people haven’t thought of in years: purchasing and streaming videos from Steam. Well precisely because of that, this section of the store is being retired.

In an announcement Valve states that non-gaming videos are not what us users want, which we really can’t argue with.

“For the past few years, we have worked on expanding Steam beyond games and software by building a video platform that supports paid and free video content,” the announcement reads. “In reviewing what Steam users actually watch, it became clear we should focus our effort on offering content that is either directly related to gaming or, is accessory content for games or software sold on Steam.”

To that end non-gaming videos will be unavailable for purchase over the coming weeks, with those already bought remaining in their owner’s libraries.

The video section of the Steam Store menu has been removed, but you can still browse what’s available by looking through the videos tag.

Video content on Steam is probably best known for Indie Game: The Movie and not much else.

This isn’t to say that watching content on Steam has been abandoned, as trailers still form a large part of game listings and streaming (which was added to the platform relatively recently) is still being used by many.
