Mechstermination Force: An interesting game with a silly name

The Nintendo Switch continues to be a bastion for new and ported indie titles, and Mechstermination Force is the latest upcoming game to get us excited when the AAA industry continues to disappoint.

Described by developer Bertil Hörberg (of Gunman Clive fame) as “Sort of a mix of Contra and Shadow of the Colossus”, the game combines 14 boss battles against giant mechs where the player can grab onto various parts of the enemies to get better angles for attacks.

These bosses – called MegaMechs – form the bulk of the game with no platforming levels in between. The trailer, embedded below, does show the player at some kind of base interacting with NPCs, so there will be some content outside of the 14 bosses.

The trailer is also cut with animated scenes which look very much like older morning cartoons. We hope these are present in-game and are not just for the trailer.

A press kit we have reveals more details, such as the four playable characters on offer which can also be used in two-player local co-op.

Mechstermination Force has a release date of “Spring 2019”. We assume that’s the US Spring, which is between late March and late June. It is a Nintendo Switch exclusive right now and is priced at $11.99 overseas.

Those who care about performance on the Switch may be happy to know that the press kit also promises 1080 p docked / 720 p handheld, both at 60 FPS.

While we may have teased the name of this title in the headline (something that is addressed by the developer), one of our favourite games of the last decade is called Enter the Gungeon, so we don’t worry about details like that too much.
