MUT’s SRC win court bid to stop the institution from kicking them out of res

Earlier this week violent student protests broke out at the Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) in KwaZulu-Natal. The University’s management suspended academic activity with immediate effect and asked students to vacate campus as well as residences.

The Student Representative Council (SRC), did not take the notice laying down as they took the University to the Durban High Court and were granted an urgent temporary interdict not to be kicked out of the institution’s residences.

“Currently we are very happy as students, we are going to celebrate this very much. We are very disappointed because what we saw in MUT were black people, who were going to give us guidance as our parents, but currently they are not doing that,” MUT SRC president, Codesa Gwala, told Times Live.

According to the publication, MUT released a statement a day before the SRC won the court case.

“As far as taking the university to court, in terms of the university statute, the vice principal has a right to close down the university after consultation with all the relevant parties to ensure safety of staff,” explained the University.
