Take a gander at some of the speakers at Blockchain Africa Conference 2019

Next week the annual Blockchain Africa Conference kicks off in Johannesburg from 28th February to 1st March before heading to Cape Town on 6th March.

The conference is a smorgasbord of all things blockchain whether it be smart contracts, cryptocurrency or self-sovereign identity, among other things.

This year the conference will play host to a number of incredible speakers in both Cape Town and Johannesburg.

So who can you expect?

Attendees in Johannesburg will be treated to a keynote by executive director of the Hyperledger Foundation, Brian Behlendorf.

The director will be speaking on the topic “The Post-Lambo Era: Blockchain Technology Gets Real”. This keynote will be presented in Johannesburg on the first day of the conference (28th February) and will explore how blockchain is being deployed in various industries and how weaknesses in the technology will be addressed this year.

There will be two speakers from the Sovrin Foundation at the Cape Town and Johannesburg conferences respectively.

In Johannesburg, chairman at the Sovrin Foundation, Dr Phillip Windley, will be discussing a matter we have a great deal of interest in – self-sovereign identity.

In Cape Town executive director of the Sovrin Foundation, Heather Dahl, will present a discussion titled “Advancing Identity and Trust through Diversity”. Dahl is billed as a cybersecurity advocate and her passion for self-sovereign identity should make for a discussion you don’t want to miss.

Then, for those itching for some discussion surrounding cryptocurrency, lead maintainer of the Monero project Riccardo ‘Fluffypony’ Spagni will be in attendance. He will be discussing how decentralised systems such as cryptocurrency are useless without mandatory privacy.

Building on cryptocurrency, co-founder and chief executive officer at Luno, Marcus Swanepoel, will talking about “How a New Global Crypto Economy Will Impact Consumers Across Africa”. The CEO spoke at the Johannesburg leg of the conference last year and this year he heads to Cape Town. We encourage all attendees to attend Swanepoel’s talk.

Finally, as you may already be aware, Western Cape Premier Helen Zille and minister Beverly Ann Schäfer will be presenting a joint key-note address at the Cape Town conference.

Their interest in this conference stems from the Western Cape Government’s key focus areas of higher economic growth and job creation through skills development and education, especially around emerging technologies such as blockchain and cryptocurrencies.
