Huawei shows off its own folding phone at MWC 2019

Huawei has fired the first response to Samsung’s Galaxy Fold as festivities kick off at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2019.

The Huawei Mate X is unlike Samsung’s handset in a number of key aspects. For one it has support for 5G making it the first 5G enabled folding phone. We might be splitting hairs but these distinctions are important.

Unlike Samsung’s Fold which has a screen up front and a 7.3inch display within its metal casing, the Mate X has an 8inch wraparound OLED display.

When folded you have a 6.4inch display up front and a 6.2inch display at the back.

One application of this display – as shown by Huawei – is being able to share what is on the “main display” (i.e. the display facing you) with somebody.

The handset itself is 11mm when folded which is incredibly thin. Despite that lean form factor the handset packs a massive 4 500mAh battery which is powering a Kirin 980 processor.

The Mate X will boast a massive 55W Huawei SuperCharge which will reportedly top up 85 percent of the battery in 30 minutes.

Looking at the 5G support for a moment, Huawei has its own Balong 5000 5G modem inside the handset.

Taking a look at the outside of the device when unfolded the Mate X is 5.4mm thin with one side being slightly thicker to accommodate for the cameras.

Speaking of which, Huawei’s partnership with Leica continues with the Mate X which houses three cameras that can be used in phone or tablet mode.

The exact specs of the cameras are not known as of time of writing.

As to price, the Mate X will fetch a pretty penny with an announced price of €2 299. There is no word on local pricing or indeed whether the Mate X will even make it to South Africa.
