The Nokia 9 PureView – HMD Global’s new flagship phone with five cameras

It would not be a Mobile World Congress press conference without a new flagship phone unveiling, and HMD Global‘s one for Nokia Mobile on 24th February was no different. To that end the manufacturer revealed the Nokia 9 PureView.

What makes this device particularly noteworthy, as you can tell from the header image above, is the fact that it sports a five camera array on the rear. This is the first time that a major smartphone maker has opted for so many rear lenses on its device, and HMD Global is touting the Nokia 9 PureView as its most advanced smartphone camera system to date.

What gives it such a billing?

Well each of the Nokia 9 PureView’s lenses is a 12MP sensor (two RGB and three Monochrome).

Interestingly the system does not work independently, with each Zeiss Optics lens designed to offer a specific function, but rather work in tandem. As such when you hit the shutter button on the in-camera app, all five 12MP lenses capture the same image.

This according to HMD Global delivers a highly detailed and richly nuanced camera performance, and one that photographers in particular will enjoy using.

As such they are saying this is a smartphone designed with photographers in mind.

Some of the other pro photographer-focused features include a dynamic range of 12.4 stops, full scene 12MP depth map, up to 4K UHD recording, and capturing pics in RAW (DNG) which is significant should you wish to start edit the image from the best possible quality.

Looking at the rest of the device, Gorilla Glass has been used for much of the body, with an aluminium frame.  Up front a 5.99″ P-OLED screen has been opted for, but no all-screen or notch is present. Internally a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset is running things, with 6GB RAM and 128GB onboard storage added to the mix.

Unfortunately HMD Global does not have a local release date or price for the Nokia 9 PureView, but to give you an approximate idea of how much it could cost, the RRP for selected regions is $699.
