As expected LG reveals G8 ThinQ at MWC 19

In the lead up to this year’s Mobile World Congress, one of the lesser kept secrets was LG’s G8 ThinQ. The device was confirmed by the South Korean manufacturer, which was then followed by a few leaked images.

Turns out they were spot on, as Day Zero of MWC 19 saw LG reveal a pair of flagship smartphones.

The less interesting of the two is the G8 ThinQ, and now we know what the device is sporting.

Up front is a 6.1″ QHD+ display which yields a 3 120 X 1 440 resolution. This portion of the device also features some intriguing elements, with a ToF Z camera and infrared sensors that allow the device to analyse and recognise the veins in the palms of user’s hands.

Yes, you read that right. As such you don’t need to physical place your fingerprint anywhere on the G8 ThinQ, or look at the device, in order to unlock it.

Whether this system catches on though remains to be seen.

As for the rest of the smartphone, it’s packing some relatively enviable specifications, including an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset, 6GB RAM and 128GB onboard storage.

There’s also a 3 500mAh battery and five cameras in total on the G8 ThinQ.

The latter finds a trio of lenses on the rear – 16MP super wide-angle, 12MP standard and 12Mp telephoto option. Up front is an 8MP standard and the aforementioned ToF Z camera offering.

While we’re on the fence about the palm-reading functionality of the G8 ThinQ, it is sporting some noteworthy specifications. But it still remains to be seen if that’s enough to stand out among the recently debuted foldable phones from competitors.
