Massive (yet tiny) 1TB microSD cards break cover at MWC 19

Growing up in an era of floppy disks and diskettes, some of our number here at Hypertext find it incredible that 1TB of storage can fit in the palm of your hand.

At MWC 19 this week Micron and Western Digital (through its SanDisk brand) have launched 1TB microSD cards that are quite a bit smaller.

Taking a look at the Micron card first we find that it is primed for high-performance mobile applications. It promises a 100MB/s read speed and 95MB/s write speed.

The keen eyed among you might be able to tell that this means the Micron c200 1TB  microSD card (the name needs a bit of work) meets the UHS-I speed class and Video Speed Class 30 specifications. That translates to: this card will be fine for 4K video recording, gaming and burst photography.

Micron didn’t share pricing but the c200 will be “broadly” available in Q2 of this year.

Western Digital’s microSD card is a quite a lot faster when it comes to read speeds.

The 1TB SanDisk Extreme UHS-I microSD card is reportedly capable of reaching speeds up to 160MB/s when reading and 90MB/s when writing.

Western Digital says that its card meets the A2 Application Performance Class criteria and apps installed on the card will launch incredibly quickly.

The 1TB SanDisk Extreme UHS-I microSD card also carries a price which is marked at $199.99 (~R2 770) which is rather dear.

That having been said we’re keen to add one of these microSD cards to Samsung’s 1TB iteration of the Galaxy S10+ for 2TB of storage capacity. Do we have 2TB of content to load on to a smartphone? Not yet, but we can try.
