The Pokémon YouTube channel is currently touring past regions

The social media accounts of Pokémon have been acting rather strangely of late, with the YouTube channel being a prime example.

Around five days ago it uploaded a video entitled “Explore Pokémon: Kanto Region”. It’s only a minute long and is a hypercut of scenes from the show, interspersed with text boxes with small amounts of information about the region.

This video also seems to be aping a tourism commercial as, at the end, it comes up with the words “which region of the Pokémon world would you want to visit?”.

As if a teaser, the channel has been uploading new videos since then. At the time of writing six such videos have been released of the Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova and Kalos regions.

Those invested in the franchise will realise that this is in chronological order that the regions were released, and the only one missing right now is the most recent one in Alola.

These uploads have only been interrupted by adverts for the new Pokémon TV app and, very strangely, a seemingly random clip featuring Team Rocket and Mimikyu.

Those looking for a deeper meaning behind these uploads make the obvious jump to an upcoming reveal of the next mainline entries in the series, a theory that is picking up more and more steam as the days go by.

The current theory is that a new game(s) will be announced on 27th February, which is known as “Pokémon Day”. These videos about the regions seem to be leading to this: Alola featured later today (the 26th) and then the new region tomorrow. This doesn’t hold much water as it would make sense to use footage from the games instead of the shows, but all of this is so much conjecture.

At the beginning of this story we mentioned the fact that other media channels were acting strangely. Over on Twitter the official @Pokemon account has been tweeting out a series of short videos showcasing the original 151 Pokémon in order. These videos come with a fictional fact (how’s that for an oxymoron?) about that Pokémon.

Right now the latest tweet is about Oddish, the 43rd Pokémon. There is a different line of speculation that the new titles will be announced after the 151 Pokémon each get their own tweet.

With Let’s Go Eevee and Let’s Go Pikachu not exactly setting the world on fire last year, and official murmurings of new mainline games coming out this year, all of this seems highly likely to be sneaky marketing to get the franchise into the news again for a big announcement. Considering we’re writing this and you’re reading it, we suppose that strategy has worked.
