Specs Comparison: Huawei Mate X vs. Samsung Galaxy Fold

When it comes to the devices of MWC 19, much of the focus has been around the Huawei Mate X and Samsung Galaxy Fold. Despite the latter being debuted last week, it is still generating plenty of attention, along with the Mate X, given their foldable display designs.

While we cannot talk about either devices design, as they’re next to impossible to experience in-person here in Barcelona, we can run through the specifications of each device, and see how they compare on paper.

To that end we’ve placed a handy table below, looking at things like folded screen size, unfolded screen size, battery capacity, number of cameras, processors and more.

Foldabale Phone Huawei Mate X Samsung Galaxy Fold
Folded Screen Size 6.6″ (2 840 X 1 148) 4.6″ (resolution not listed)
Unfolded Screen Size 8″ (2 840 X 2 200) 7.3″ (2 152 X 1 536)
Form Factor Paper-style Book-style
Processor 7nm octa-core HiSilicon Kirin 980 7nm octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 855
RAM 8GB RAM 12GB RAM
Storage 512GB (nanoSD up to 256GB) 512GB (no microSD slot)
Main Camera Triple lens (40MP wide, 16MP ultra-wide, 8MP telephoto Triple lens (12MP wide, 12MP telephoto, 16MP ultra-wide
Battery 4 500mAh (55W fast charging) 4 380mAh (18W fast charging)
Weight 295g Weight not listed
RRP (Selected Markets) €2 230 $1 980

Looking at the numbers, it looks like the Huawei Mate X is leading the way in several categories, with a larger display (folded and unfolded) and battery in particular.

On the memory side, things are split, with the Galaxy Fold featuring more RAM, and both devices with 512GB onboard storage. The Mate X has a nanoSD slot though, whereas the Fold has no expandable storage whatsoever.

The other important element, not listed above, is the fact that the Mate X supports 5G while the Fold does not. With 5G a big theme at MWC 19, it could give the former an edge in the new foldable phone wars.

Both devices will cost a pretty penny though, with them under the R40K mark given the current exchange rates. That said, they could be more than R50K when they’re launched in South Africa.
