Alien is getting a 4K HDR makeover for its 40th birthday

There are few movies that can still terrify a person and one of those is Ridley Scott’s 1979 horror masterpiece – Alien.

At 40 years old we’ll admit the film looks a bit dated (in terms of resolution) but later this year that will change with a 4K HDR remaster of the film due out on Blu-ray.

The remastering was overseen by Pam Dery and Ridley Scott and the original negative from filming was used to bring the space nasties to life. In truth, we’re almost afraid to see the Xenomorphs in glorious 4K HDR.

The remaster of Alien will include the 1979 theatrical version as well as the director’s cut from 2003, according to Ars Technica.

For the hardcore fans the original theatrical version of the film will offer two versions of the film’s score. While the director’s cut will boast 5.1 DTS-HD MA sound, the theatrical cut will only support 4.1 sound. Deleted scenes will also be included.

For those readers who have not seen Alien we highly recommend you use this remaster as an excuse to watch the film. While it led to a number of sequels and spin-offs, the original is pure sci-fi horror at its finest and H.R. Geiger did a fantastic job of scaring us with his interpretation of the aliens.

The remaster of Alien is due out on 23rd April and there are rumours that the remaster will come to streaming/download services such as iTunes as well but these are unconfirmed.
