Truphone announces partnership with Rain to bring eSIMs to SA

Despite Apple’s insistence on fitting the iPhone XS series with an eSIM, owners of the handset in South Africa have been left wanting as the technology isn’t quite available here, at least not yet.

This morning we’ve received word that Truphone has partnered with Rain to launch eSIM support in South Africa.

The solution will employ Truphone’s GSMA-accredited eSIM provisioning platforms which is interoperable with other eSIM devices.

“I am delighted to see Rain joining a rapidly growing number of operators on our platform, and spearheading the move towards eSIM in mobile technology in South Africa; creating a partnership that ultimately gives the customer greater power over their own mobile connectivity. Rain has built an admirable and innovative business model for the South African telecommunications market. Offering eSIM services is the next major step in their journey. At Truphone, we’re keen to develop partnerships with companies with similar ambitions to accelerate their growth, and we are delighted to add Rain to our portfolio of mobile operators onboarded with the Truphone eSIM technology,” Truphone chief executive officer, Ralph Steffens, said in a statement.

An eSIM – as the name implies – is an electronic SIM that doesn’t require a user go out to a store to purchase a slice of plastic. Rather, users can have a SIM provisioned from the device.

Our hope is that the introduction of eSIMs will make things like moving networks less of a pain in the rear as now you won’t have to go into a store but rather just contact a carrier directly.

There is  – at time of writing – no word on when eSIMs will be supported or indeed any comment from Rain itself.

We have fired off a request for rain to comment on this development and will update this story when we receive communication from the carrier.
