Tesla is closing its stores and moving sales online

There are somethings that we don’t mind buying online such as tech products because we don’t really need to get hands on with a GPU to know how it works.

Tesla seems to think its customers feel the same about vehicles and the firm has announced that over the next few months its physical stores will be closed in favour of an online sales portal.

The company boasted in a blog post that buyers in North America would soon be able to purchase a Tesla using their mobile phone in about a minute.

We’re sure you’ve spotted the same problem we did – how are folks meant to test drive a Tesla?

Well they’ve thought of that.

“We are also making it much easier to try out and return a Tesla, so that a test drive prior to purchase isn’t needed. You can now return a car within 7 days or 1,000 miles for a full refund. Quite literally, you could buy a Tesla, drive several hundred miles for a weekend road trip with friends and then return it for free. With the highest consumer satisfaction score of any car on the road, we are confident you will want to keep your Tesla,” the firm said.

By closing physical stores, Tesla says it will be able to lower the cost of its vehicles by six percent.

The firm goes on to talk up the ability to purchase a Tesla anywhere in the US thanks to this solution but what we want to know is when we’ll be able to purchase a Tesla in South Africa.

The firm mentioned extending the capability to purchase a Tesla on your phone to a global scale but there’s no word yet on how that would work or indeed when we can expect that.

The firm has said that some stores in high-traffic areas will remain open as galleries and information centres.

As for service Tesla says, “we will be increasing our investment in the Tesla service system, with the goal of same-day, if not same-hour service, and with most service done by us coming to you, rather than you coming to us. Moreover, we guarantee service availability anywhere in any country in which we operate.”

We’re curious to see how this decision works for Tesla. There’s no doubt that owners are fans of the brand but maybe potential buyers won’t be so eager to purchase a car online without getting to test it first.

That having been said, perhaps we’re just too set in our ways and this is the new normal.
