Fundanii digital storytelling brought to South Africa’s township

Many townships in South Africa don’t have access to digital learning platforms, but that has changed for the community of Mdantsane, near East London.

In this community a digital outreach programme called Fundanii has partnered with SAP and Google as part of Africa Code Week to educate learners in the area and surrounding schools about computer literacy and digital storytelling.

“The world is changing at an amazing pace and many of our children risk being left behind. We decided to create a platform that would give kids hope for the possibilities of what coding, literacy and learning can bring to their lives,” says Fundanii co-founder, Sinovuyo Apleni.

According to the Apleni, Fundanii joined forces with Megan Skelly, a computer teacher at Hudson Park Primary School. The partnership has provided coding classes to 250 pupils from Gcobani Senior Primary and Mkululeko Senior Primary.

The co-founder’s also added that through the funding they received from its partners SAP and Google, they were able to create the Fundanii Stories website. This is a digital storytelling platform for children and children’s authors. It provides learners with a workbook that they can complete,  which encourages them to develop basic storytelling skills.

“Storytelling is an integral part of Xhosa culture  and part of the daily rhythm of Mdantsane, but we have seen a recent decrease in interest in literature. one of our libraries have closed down leaving the entire area of Mdantsane with a single library for more than 150 000 residents,” added Fundanii co-founder, Luthando Gubevu.

“Africa Code Week is built on the principal of building sustainable local capacity for digital skills development among African Youth. We command our partners Google for recognising the importance of Fundanii’s work in Mdantsane, and we look forward to seeing how their important work continues to grow across our country and beyond,” concluded project lead for at SAP Africa, Sunil Geness.
