TUT campuses shut down again over meal allowances

Last month the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) suspended academic activities after student protests broke out over accommodation, as well as students with historic debt being allowed to register.

The University then re-opened the campuses that were affected and extended its academic year due to the lost time while students were protesting.

Earlier this week TUT has once again had to shut down all its nine campuses – namely Arcadia, Arts Campus, Pretoria West, Ga-Rankuwa, Soshanguve North and South, eMalahleni, Mbombela and Polokwane. This after more violent student protests erupted earlier this week over meal allowances.

“The safety of students, staff and TUT property is our first priority, therefore due to the renewed student protest action from early Monday, the decision was taken to suspend activities. Management was engaging with students to try to find a lasting solution to the matter,” said TUT spokesperson, Willa de Ruyter, to News24.

According to the publication, the students marched to the office of Higher Education Minister, Naledi Pandor, demanding meal allowances from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), mainly for students residing off-campus, along with asking for more accomodation to be made available.

“We can’t study with empty stomachs, and it is clear that management is not taking our concerns seriously,” added SRC president, Lucky Nkambule.

At the time of writing there has no confirmation on when the campuses will open again.
