Nintendo dips its toes into VR with a new Labo kit

Ever since Nintendo launched the Switch it has been rumoured that it could be used in a VR headset thanks to its small form factor, but the low resolution screen and under powered internals were seemingly two giant hurdles for that idea… until it was announced recently that virtual reality would come to the console via Labo.

As a quick reminder Labo is Nintendo’s very unique system for integrating physical items into virtual games, with the main component being sheets of cardboard that are folded into various shapes and tools which interact with the Switch and its Joy-Con controllers.

Labo has been released in kits which usually come with a variety of different constructs, and this VR entry is no different.

Announced, strangely, on Twitter, Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit is the fourth instalment in this system following the Variety Kit, Robot Kit and (most recently) the Vehicle Kit.

Unlike those previous entries we don’t have any videos to go along with them to see the games and software in action, though partial descriptions can be found on Nintendo’s site.

“Fend off an alien invasion with the Blaster, visit a colourful in-game ocean and snap photos of the sea life with the Camera, and so much more,” the product page reads.

Nintendo is also trying something new with the way it sells these accessories, with four different options.

The first is a Starter Kit which comes with an enclosure to turn the Switch into a VR headset, together with what they’re calling a “Blaster”.

This Starter Kit can then be added to with two Expansion Sets.

Expansion Set 1 is subtitled “Elephant + Camera” with Expansion Set 2 called “Bird + Wind Pedal”. We’re not exactly sure what these will be used for but you can infer (and guess) from the limited promotional images we’ve embedded on this page.

Finally there is the full fat kit which comes with everything discussed already. We assume the reason the kit was split up in this fashion is to save money for those who don’t want everything in the larger kit, and would prefer to save some money.

Most of the software and interactivity with previous Labo kits have been such short experiences that we can’t really stand behind this decision. Still, we’re always open to more options and we suspect that this newest Labo experiment will cost more than previous ones due to the inclusion of the necessary lenses.

Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit is set to launch 12th April. Nintendo didn’t include any pricing with their announcement but the kits can be found for sale on some overseas sites. Best Buy has the Start Kit priced at $39.99 and the complete kit at $79.99.

We’ve received all previous Labo kits in South Africa so we should see local pricing soon enough.
